When you are setting up a Virtual Assistant business, your mindset is just as important as your business plan. It is a common trend, particularly among women, to be our own harshest critics. We are often brilliant at downplaying our achievements and placing invisible obstacles in our own path.
In my years as a VA mentor, I have seen that negativity is the quickest way to stall a start-up. If you want your business to thrive, you must protect your headspace. Here is how to keep your outlook positive and your momentum high.
The way you view your abilities will determine the trajectory of your business. As Henry Ford famously said: “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re probably right.”
Starting a VA business involves stepping outside your comfort zone daily. There is naturally a lot of pressure to make it work, but piling extra “mental pressure” on yourself only leads to burnout. Mindset is where your professional journey begins; if you believe in the value you provide, your potential clients will too.
The shift from employee to self-employed doesn’t happen overnight. You need to find what help you “feel” like a CEO. For some, it’s a morning mantra; for others, it’s dressing professionally even when working from a home office. Ask yourself: “How would a successful business owner handle this situation?” Aligning your actions with that vision helps the mindset follow suit.
How you start your day sets the tone for your productivity. A solid morning routine, whether it involves exercise, reading, or a healthy breakfast, helps you start on a positive note.
Two powerful habits for VAs are gratitude and preparation. Writing a to-do list the night before clears your head for sleep, while practicing gratitude for small wins keeps your focus on abundance rather than what you feel is “missing.”
One of the biggest triggers for negativity is the feeling that you don’t know enough. Here is a secret: you don’t need to know everything yet.
You are a work in progress. You only need to know enough to get started; the rest you will learn on the job as you grow. Having a mentor or a coach can be a huge help here, as they can provide the “missing pieces” and keep you motivated when you hit a learning curve.
There is a subtle but powerful shift that happens when you stop “trying” so hard. Often, when we say we will “try” to do something, we are already giving ourselves an excuse to fail.
Instead, try reframing your tasks. Instead of “trying” to get a client, tell yourself you are “giving it a go” or “experimenting with a new strategy.” This removes the heavy weight of expectation and allows you to be more creative and relaxed in your approach.
Overwhelm and a lack of direction are the fastest routes to a negative mindset. A simple business plan acts as an anchor. It clears the mental clutter because you no longer have to wonder what to do next. When you are clear on your destination, it is much easier to stay positive about the journey.
In the early days, it’s easy to get distracted by “shiny object syndrome”, jumping from one new marketing tool to the next without seeing anything through.
To stay positive, you need to see results, and results come from focused action. Hold yourself accountable. Focus on one task at a time and ensure your energy is going toward actions that actually lead to your desired goal. Completing one important task feels much better than half-finishing five.
Don’t wait until you have a full roster of clients to celebrate. Every small victory is proof that you are doing it! Whether it’s sending your first invoice, mastering a new piece of software, or simply making your first “prospecting” call, take a moment to acknowledge it. These celebrations are the fuel that keeps your motivation high.
