For many new Virtual Assistants, starting a business can be a shock to the system. If you are used to the structure of employment, the switch to business ownership can feel awkward and unsettling. Beyond the practicalities of tax and tech, there is a fundamental mindset shift that must take place.
To build a sustainable business, you need to be in it for the long game. Here is how to move away from the employee headspace and step into your role as a CEO.
As an employee, the primary goal is often simply to get paid for the hours you work. As a business owner, your priority is the health and success of the business itself. This requires a more creative and innovative headspace.
Part of this mindset is learning to run your business by your own rules. This means:
Managing Expectations: You decide your working hours and communication boundaries.
Setting the Vision: You are responsible for the business plan and the long-term direction of the company.
Total Responsibility: The buck stops with you. While that can feel heavy, it is also incredibly liberating to know you have the power to equip your business for success exactly how you see fit.
Many VAs hold themselves back because they feel they aren’t “ready.” Imposter syndrome, perfectionism, and the urge to do everything perfectly often lead to procrastination.
In a job, a manager tells you when you are ready for a promotion. In business, you have to promote yourself. Whether you feel 100% ready or not, you have to step up, put in the work, and put yourself out there. Even if you start as an Associate for another VA, you still need to think like a business owner, not a subcontractor waiting for instructions.
As a VA, you are used to people delegating tasks to you. However, to grow, you must learn to delegate too.
You can run a business solo, but it is much easier (and faster) if you have support. This doesn’t always mean hiring a team of Associates immediately. It could mean outsourcing the things you aren’t equipped to do, such as website maintenance, complex video editing, or your own bookkeeping. Freeing up your time allows you to focus on high-level strategy and higher-paying client work.
As a business owner, you are constantly stretching your comfort zone. If you feel uncomfortable, awkward, or slightly nervous, that is actually a good sign. It means you are growing.
Instead of viewing that “gut flutter” as a reason to stop, relabel it as excitement or nervous energy. Growth and comfort rarely coexist. To become a successful entrepreneur, you have to get used to the feeling of doing things for the first time.
In the corporate world, colleagues are often viewed as competition. In the VA world, your peers are your greatest allies.
Surround yourself with people who support your journey. This should include:
Personal Cheerleaders: Friends and family who support you without judgment.
Strategic Peers: Other VAs who understand the industry and can offer advice.
Mentors and Coaches: People who are “further ahead” than you. Having a mentor gives you access to the knowledge and confidence you need to avoid common pitfalls.
In employment, we wait for a manager to notice our hard work during an annual review. As a business owner, you cannot afford to wait. You must celebrate your own wins.
Success isn’t always about huge financial milestones. It is also:
Sending your first formal proposal.
Mastering a new piece of software.
Publishing a blog post.
Ordering your new business cards.
Review your results regularly. Track your finances, your website hits, and your time, but also take a moment to be proud of the progress you’ve made.
Mindset is the engine of your business. If the engine isn’t tuned, the car won’t go far. By shifting from an employee “waiting” mindset to an entrepreneurial “acting” mindset, you set yourself up for a thriving, long-term career.
Are you ready to master the business owner mindset? The VA Momentum Course focuses heavily on this transition, providing you with the tools and support to go from “thinking about it” to “doing it” with confidence.
