Are home workers more productive?

2nd May 2026

are home workers more productive

More people are leaving the office in favour of working from home than ever before. It is no wonder. A quick search reveals numerous studies, including 2026 data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), highlighting the shift. Whether you work for yourself or as an employee, one major question remains: are home workers more productive? And if so, why?

Home workers are more productive, if they have the right mindset

Recent research consistently shows that most home workers match or exceed in office productivity. In fact, some UK studies have shown a boost in output of over 10%. However, there is a catch. You are only productive at home if you can work on your own initiative and remain highly motivated.

If you are the type of worker who needs someone to check up on you or take the lead, working from home will likely lower your productivity. Frankly, if you need constant reassurance, you are probably not suited to running your own business either. Home working only works if you can manage your own workload, prioritise effectively, and motivate yourself to get the job done without a manager hovering over your shoulder. Learn about working from home – the good, bad and the boundaries.

Why productivity peaks at home

There are several reasons why our output often increases when we ditch the office. These range from mindset to environment:

1. You control the distractions

Busy offices are hubs of noise and interruption. At home, you can shut the door on the world. This allows for “deep work” that is rarely possible in a sterile, open plan office environment.

2. You work with your natural rhythms

The traditional 9 to 5 does not suit everyone. Working from home allows for flexibility. If you are a night owl or an early bird, you can select a pattern that suits your natural rhythm and home commitments.

3. Personalised motivation

We each have our own motivators. Corporate targets or competing with colleagues do not drive everyone. At home, you can organise your workload in the way that best sparks your own drive.

4. An inspiring environment

Most offices are designed to be a “suit all” environment, which often means they suit no one. At home, you can create a space that sparks your imagination and creativity.  My office looks out over the fields and I cam often see deer or pheasants parading around them.

5. Better routines

Working with your natural rhythms allows for routines that include regular breaks and focused bursts of activity. This prevents the mid afternoon slump that often plagues office workers.

The reality check

It is worth considering the type of work you are doing. We all have tasks that are not our forte, and productivity will drop there regardless of your location. Some argue that home workers are more productive simply because they work longer hours—saving an average of 72 minutes a day on the commute, much of which is reinvested into work.

If you want to ensure your productivity remains high while building a professional business, the VA Momentum Course provides the structure and accountability needed to thrive outside the traditional office.
