We all have a natural body clock that dictates whether we are a morning person or a night owl. This rhythm determines when our energy and attention are at their peak. As small business owners, we have the freedom to design our own schedules, yet many of us still try to force ourselves into a 9-5pm box that simply does not fit.
The natural rhythm of your body dictates your alertness and productivity. This applies to you, your colleagues, and your clients. If you want to work at your highest level, you must stop fighting your biology and start working with it. Understanding how to align your tasks with your energy is a key component of the VA Momentum Course, as it allows you to produce better results in less time.
Generally, our body temperature starts to rise just before we wake up. It continues to climb until midday before falling back down. This fluctuation directly affects your concentration, alertness, and memory. While everyone is different, most people follow a predictable pattern:
Morning: Memory, alertness, and concentration gradually improve.
Midday to 4pm: Attention levels begin to slide.
Post Lunch: Energy dips significantly, typically around 2pm.
Early Evening: The mind starts to wander.
Late Night: Emotions tend to rise around 10pm.
Stop trying to tackle complex problem solving when your brain is in a slump. Use these averages to schedule your workload effectively:
8am to 9am: Send your important emails. You are generally at your most upbeat and professional first thing in the morning.
Late Morning: This is the time for deep cognitive work. Schedule your creative tasks, skill learning, or complex client projects here.
Post Lunch: If you need a break or a short nap, take it. Do not try to power through a fog of low productivity.
Early Evening: Since the mind wanders more easily now, use this for brainstorming or open minded thinking. It is a great time for “big picture” business planning.
8pm: This is an ideal time to schedule Facebook posts, as your audience is often relaxing and scrolling through social media.
After 10pm: Avoid Twitter. Research shows focus shifts toward more emotional and often agitated content late at night. Stay professional and stay off the platform.
These averages are a solid starting point to help you interact with clients and manage your own task list. However, the real win comes from tracking your own unique peaks and troughs. When you find your own rhythm, you can stop surviving the 9-5pm grind and start thriving in a schedule that actually works for you.
Do you schedule your tasks around your body clock, or are you still forcing yourself to work a traditional day? Share your experiences and how you manage your energy in the comments below.
