Small businesses thrive when they have a robust network of contacts. Networking does more than provide a list of names or potential joint venture partners; it enables you to get visible and stand in front of potential clients.
However, networking is not just about being seen in the right circles. It is about building genuine relationships. In many ways, business networking is a lot like dating.
When you are single and looking for a partner, you will not find them if you stay inside your house all the time. Your business is no different. If you want to be noticed, you have to get away from your desk and attend networking events. Whether online or in person, visibility is the first step toward connection.
Meeting someone for the first time can be daunting for everyone involved. You want to make a good impression because you know first impressions count, so you make sure you look and act the part. However, one thing that will put anyone off—whether a romantic interest or a business contact—is being too pushy.
If you walk up to someone and immediately try to sell your services or push a collaboration, the other person will run a mile. Focus on the person, not the pitch.
When you are dating, you often have to meet a lot of frogs before you find your prince. When networking for your business, not everyone you meet will be your ideal client. Not everyone is suitable for you or your business. Accept that fact, drop the heavy expectations, and loosen up. It is a numbers game.
There is nothing worse than going on a great first date and thinking you made a connection, only to never hear from the person again. Business networking is no different. It is incredibly annoying, not to mention unprofessional, to meet someone who promises to follow up but fails to do so. If you meet someone you want to work with or know better, let them know and ensure you follow up promptly after that initial contact.
A quality relationship requires nurturing. Spend time talking with people and sharing your experiences. Show them what you have to offer, but more importantly, practice your listening skills. Listen to their story, their needs, and their pain points. Look for ways you can help them achieve their goals and share things that provide real value.
Whether you are looking for a new partner or a new business relationship, look at networking as the means to meeting the ideal person for you. If you need help with the confidence to put yourself out there, the VA Momentum Course offers the structure and support you need to present yourself as a professional business owner.
