Networking Nerves or Just Excitement? How to Master the Room

I hear it constantly from VAs: “I am absolutely terrified of walking into a room full of strangers.”

My response is always the same: That is fine. I still get nervous. It is perfectly normal to feel a bit of edge when you walk into a networking event. But there is a massive difference between normal nerves and talking yourself out of the room before you have even parked the car.

If you are telling yourself you are “bad at networking” because your hands shake or your voice wavers, you are sabotaging your business before you have given it a chance. Networking is a long game. While you might get a lucky lead at your first event, the real value comes from showing up consistently and building genuine relationships.

Reframing the Adrenaline

I remember a story from Carmen, the previous owner of VACT, regarding the very first VA conference. She was facing an audience of 120 people and her lapel mic failed. She had to use a handheld microphone, and as the adrenaline surged, her hands and voice began to shake. She was worried the audience would think she was terrified, but a colleague made a poignant point: people often mistake excitement for a lack of confidence.

Think about your own experiences. When your throat goes dry or your heart starts racing, is it really fear? Or is it the excitement of a new opportunity? You are there to grow your business and meet new people. That is something to be fired up about. Stop labelling your physical reactions as “weakness” and start seeing them as your body getting ready for action.

The Mindset Shift

Confidence starts with your mindset. As Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can’t, then you are right.”

If you spend the drive to an event telling yourself that you are terrible at networking and never know what to say, you have already lost. Where is the evidence for these claims? If you have never been to this specific group before, you cannot possibly know it will be a failure.

You Are Already a Networker

The truth is, you have been networking for years. You do it at parties, at wedding receptions, and at the school gates. You talk to people you do not know, you ask about their lives, and you find common ground. That is all networking is: building relationships so people can get to know, like, and trust you.

The only thing that changes in a business context is the label we put on it. A room full of professionals is just a room full of people. They are not there to catch you out; 99% of them are lovely and probably just as nervous as you are.

Take Control

Success in networking requires you to stop being your own worst enemy. Work on your mindset first. Assume that you will enjoy the meeting and that you have value to offer the room.
