stop wearing so many hats in your va business

Choosing your hats: Why doing everything is holding your business back

To be a good VA, you need essential qualities in place. You must be great at organisation and excel at time management. However, being aware of where your time goes is only half the story. You also need to be smart about how many hats you are wearing.

VAs, like most business owners, are experts at juggling. When we first start out, funds are often limited and we have more time on our hands, so we get into the habit of doing everything ourselves. Saving money is the priority, so we wear every hat and take on every role.

Appreciate that your priorities have changed

As your reputation grows, you inevitably end up with more clients, more income, and less time. Yet, many VAs still try to do the same tasks they have always done, even if they dislike them or have to work late into the night to fit them in.

The reality is that by continuing to wear every hat, you are compromising the success of your business and keeping yourself stuck. By making a few small decisions, you can turn this around. You can remind yourself of what you are actually good at and create a plan to make that happen.

Choose your hats carefully

Start by knowing which hats you actually want to wear. Focus on what you do best and what you are passionate about. These are the hats that should have “I love this” embroidered on them. These are the talents that sparked your desire to start a VA business in the first place.

By focusing on your strengths, you give your business and your clients the best possible version of you. You want to be the expert who excels, rather than the generalist who tries to master everything and ends up being mediocre. If you want to enjoy your business and feel a sense of achievement, you must drop the hats that are restricting your progress.

Boost your energy and motivation

it’s important to know your own strengths and weaknesses! The quickest way to reclaim your energy is to drop the tasks that drain you. What are you currently doing that you dislike? Which tasks do you procrastinate over? What eats into your time and leaves you feeling frustrated with the results? These are the tasks you need to remove from your schedule.

This does not mean binning them without a thought, but it does mean learning to let them go.

Learn to let go

Finally, give your business the very same benefits you give your clients: the ability to outsource. By outsourcing the tasks you no longer want to do, you are giving yourself a gift and allowing someone else to shine in their area of expertise. Often, the tasks you outsource will be completed to a higher standard than you could manage yourself.

The result is that your business thrives, your associate’s business thrives, and your client work reaches a higher standard.

If you are ready to turn your VA business into an awesome, scalable venture, the VA Membership or our VA Mastermind provides the tools you need to develop your business, gain high value clients, and increase your fees with confidence.
