As small business owners, we often pride ourselves on being a jack of all trades. We know a little bit about every moving part of our operation. While that grit is admirable, it is also a trap. You can easily get bogged down in the daily grind and lose sight of why you started this journey in the first place. You forget the very thing you are actually good at and love doing.
Do you remember what you enjoy? Do you remember your original mission? Too often, we perform tasks simply because they are on the to do list, regardless of whether they play to our strengths or highlight our weaknesses. For your business to thrive, you must focus on growth. That means doing more of what you are good at and significantly less of what you are not.
To get a clear, honest picture of where you stand, you need to use proven frameworks. Start with a SWOT Analysis. This is not just corporate jargon; it is a vital tool for any serious business owner.
Strengths: Internal advantages you have over competitors.
Weaknesses: Internal areas where you struggle or lack resources.
Opportunities: External factors you can exploit to grow.
Threats: External challenges that could cause trouble.
Beyond SWOT, consider the Energy Audit. Track your tasks for a week and mark which ones energise you and which ones drain you. If a task is a weakness and it drains your energy, it has no business being on your desk.
Grab a pen and be honest. Make a list of your genuine strengths. Only write down what you are good at AND actually like doing. Use these questions to guide you:
What specific skills and qualifications do you possess?
What do you do better than your competitors?
What do clients and peers consistently praise you for?
What comes easily to you while others struggle?
What do you want to be known for in the VA industry?
Now, let’s look at the flip side. Identifying weaknesses is not an exercise in self criticism; it is about efficiency.
What tasks do you avoid, put off, or procrastinate over?
What do others perceive as your downside?
Which tasks leave you feeling frustrated or irritated?
What are the technical or administrative gaps in your current setup?
Growing a business requires you to double down on your strengths. You cannot totally avoid every task you dislike, but you can decide two things: Do these tasks actually need to be done? And do they need to be done by YOU?
The goal is to be known for your excellence. You can choose to work on a weakness to turn it into a strength, but the more profitable route is often to outsource. Give those tasks to someone whose strengths match your weaknesses. If you want to move from a basic setup to a thriving business, the VA Membership can help you bridge that gap by teaching you how to lead and scale effectively.
Having a weakness does not make you less capable. It makes you human. By owning both sides of your professional personality, you are being an authentic leader. This clarity will help your business flourish.
