Many Virtual Assistants are looking to grow their businesses this year. For some, that means the initial leap of launching or creating new products. For others, growth is measured by an increase in income and a higher caliber of client. Regardless of your specific goals, mastering your mindset is the absolute foundation of your success.
Working on your mindset is not a “nice to have” luxury. It is one of the most critical professional skills you can develop. It pays dividends in your business and provides a massive boost to your mental resilience and general wellbeing. It’s hard moving from an employee to business owner mindset but it is critical for your success.
In simple terms, what you believe about yourself and your abilities dictates the ceiling of your success. Your perspective creates your reality. If you believe you are worthy of high-level business success, you will achieve it because you’ll act like someone who belongs there.
If you believe you are resourceful and can always find a solution, you will spot opportunities where others see dead ends. Conversely, if you believe there aren’t enough clients to go around or that you’ll never reach your income goals, you are effectively capping your own potential.
Your brain is a filter. It actively looks for evidence to support your existing beliefs, whether those beliefs serve you or sabotage you. Mindset matters because, without addressing it, you will remain stuck at the level you subconsciously believe you deserve.
Mindset work isn’t about being “pink and fluffy.” It’s about discipline and mental toughness. Here are 10 ways to start:
Start now There is no “perfect” time to improve your mental game. You don’t need a special course or a quiet retreat. Make the decision now. Pick one item from this list and implement it today.
Stop comparing yourself to other VAs Comparison is the fastest way to trigger a downward spiral. There will always be someone further ahead or earning more. They aren’t you. You are a unique blend of skills and personality. Focus on your own lane.
Choose constructive positivity This isn’t about ignoring reality. It’s about maintaining a state of mind that allows you to see solutions rather than just problems. High energy and motivation are tools; use them. Try keeping a daily gratitude log to train your brain to spot what is working.
Drop the self-deprecation We are often far harder on ourselves than we would ever be on a friend or a colleague. Stop talking disrespectfully about your own abilities. Stop downplaying your goals. Treat yourself with the same professional respect you give your best clients. (I know this hard but you need to do it!)
Shut out the noise The online world is full of opinions that don’t matter. If a Facebook group isn’t serving you, leave it. If a “guru” makes you feel inadequate, unsubscribe. If people in your life are “Negative Nellies,” minimise contact or stop sharing your dreams with them. Protect your environment.
Visualise with intent Visualisation only works if you attach emotion to it. When you picture yourself hitting a goal, feel the pride and confidence that comes with it. This trains your brain to recognise those scenarios as achievable reality, making you more open to the practical steps required to get there.
Practise acceptance Acceptance is a powerful tool. It means acknowledging a mistake or a setback, accepting that it happened, and choosing to move forward anyway. Don’t waste energy beating yourself up over things you cannot change. Use what you have, where you are, and get back to work.
Audit your inputs Just as you watch what you eat for physical health, you must monitor what you feed your mind. Is your “mental diet” made up of doom-scrolling and negativity, or is it filled with knowledge, growth, and substance?
Put in the work Reading about mindset is not the same as doing the work. Change requires action. Small, consistent steps every day will build a formidable mindset over time.
Celebrate every win Recognise your progress, no matter how small. Did you replace a negative thought with a productive one? That’s a win. Did you clear out toxic digital clutter? That’s a win. These small celebrations build the confidence and expectations needed for much larger victories.
