There are constant demands on our time. When you work from home, it is incredibly easy to find yourself working on the wrong priorities without even realising it.
Between client deliverables and family commitments, it is understandable that you might feel disappointed by a lack of progress or stressed by a mounting to-do list. Usually, this stress stems from a misalignment of priorities. When you are building a business, it is easy to get tunnel vision regarding turnover or client numbers, losing sight of the actual reason you started this journey in the first place.
You must be clear on your personal and business values. If they clash, you will fail. For example, if you want to work three days a week to spend time on hobbies or with your children, but your financial goals require a full-time salary, something has to give. You need to make a firm decision on which takes precedence and adjust your business model accordingly.
Before you say “yes” to a new project, check it against your values. If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t get in.
You need to schedule regular reviews to confirm you are still on track. If your priority is family time but you are tempted to take on three new clients that will eat into your weekends, you have a conflict. These sessions are your opportunity to ensure you are taking on tasks because you want to, not because you feel you have to.
It is easy to write a list based entirely on client needs while neglecting your own. If you don’t block out time for your own business growth, your motivation and productivity will eventually drop. Dedicate “CEO time” every week. Many members of the VA Membership use our weekly co-working sessions specifically for this. If it isn’t in the diary, it won’t happen.
If your list isn’t prioritised, you will naturally gravitate towards the easy tasks that offer instant gratification. This is procrastination in disguise. Tackle the hardest, most impactful tasks early in the day when you are most alert. Your daily list should be a blend of client work and your own business development.
Stop multitasking. It doesn’t work. Block out dedicated chunks of time for specific tasks and stick to them. You cannot honour your values if you are constantly distracted.
Finally, the most important tool in your arsenal is the word “no.” Stop taking on tasks that don’t align with your values. Outsource what you shouldn’t be doing and stop working with clients who are a bad fit. Start saying yes to the life and business you actually want to lead.
How do you ensure you are staying focused on the right priorities? Share your thoughts in the comments.
