5 Signs that you’re ready to hire a VA business mentor

28th February 2026

5 signs you are ready for a mentor

There is no shortage of “gurus” telling you to invest in yourself. But in the Virtual Assistant world, timing is everything.

Hire a mentor too early, and you’re staring at a mounting credit card bill before you’ve even sent your first invoice. Hire one too late, and you’ve likely already burnt yourself out trying to “white-knuckle” your way to success.

So, how do you know if you’re standing at the right crossroads? I recommend hiring a VA Coach or Mentor only when it’s wise (financially sound) and productive (you have the capacity to actually implement their advice).

Here are the five clear signs that you’re ready to take the plunge.

1. Your Cash Flow Can Support the Growth

Let’s be real: business coaching is an investment, not a magic wand. While many startups want a mentor to help them “get started faster,” it is rarely wise to go into deep debt before you have proof of concept.

  • The Rule of Thumb: You don’t need to be making six figures, but you do need enough consistent income to cover the cost without sacrificing your mortgage or food shopping.

  • The Strategy: Secure your first 1–2 “anchor” clients first. Then, use that revenue to fund the mentor who will help you find the next five to ten clients.

2. You’ve Reached the “Accountability Ceiling”

One of the best parts of being a VA is having no boss. One of the worst parts is… having no boss. If you find yourself stuck in a cycle of “procrastivity” (doing busy work to avoid the scary, high-impact tasks), you need a mentor. A mentor acts as your strategic partner; someone to hold your feet to the fire and ensure your “to-do” list actually aligns with your “to-earn” goals.

3. You’re Successful, But You’re Playing Small

Are you consistently earning, but feel like you’re hitting an invisible glass ceiling?

  • Maybe you’re scared to raise your rates.

  • Maybe you have limiting beliefs about what a “VA” is allowed to earn.

  • Maybe you’re stuck in the “trading hours for money” trap.

If you know you’re capable of the next level but can’t see the path to get there, a mentor provides the external perspective to help you “up your game.”

4. You’re Working Hard, But Staying Still

Traction is different from action. If you are working 40+ hours a week but your bank account or business structure isn’t changing, you’re stuck in the mud. A VA Mentor has already walked the path you’re on. They can look at your processes with an objective eye and identify exactly where you’re getting “jammed up”, saving you months of trial and error.

5. Overwhelm Has Become Your Default Setting

Whether your business is growing too fast or you’re just disorganised, feeling “underwater” is a sign that your current systems (or lack thereof) are failing you.

Note: Overwhelm is often a symptom of success. It means there is demand for what you do, but you lack the strategy to manage it. A mentor provides the coping strategies and scaling systems to move you from “chaos” back to “control.

Are You Ready to Scale?

Hiring a mentor is a declaration of intent. It shows you are ready, willing, and financially able to treat your business like a business, not a hobby.

I want to hear from you: Have you ever worked with a mentor? What was the “tipping point” that made you realise you couldn’t do it alone anymore? Let’s chat in the comments!
