Running your own business is hard work. There are no shortcuts, no magic wands, and no “overnight success” stories that don’t involve years of groundwork. What keeps you going is the belief that you can build something that allows you to do what you love.
But let’s be direct: is that always possible from day one?
In the beginning, you will have to do tasks you dislike. You’ll be the IT department, the bookkeeper, and the cleaner, alongside delivering for your clients. However, it is entirely possible to move away from the “grind” if you are smart with your planning and level-headed with your decisions.
Here are ten no-nonsense tips to help you build a business doing what you love and less of what you don’t.
You cannot hit a target you haven’t set. When you start, you must understand the bigger picture. Write it down. Having a clear plan of action helps you stay on track when things get chaotic. The journey won’t be a straight line—life, kids, and unexpected hurdles will knock you off course—but if you have a blueprint, you will always know how to steer back to the right path.
Stop waiting for a badge of permission. Trust your skills and your capacity to learn. Hard work and focus are non-negotiable, but so is faith in yourself. You don’t need to know everything; you just need to be one step ahead of your clients to provide value. If you want to sharpen those skills, professional development is your best investment.
Too many business owners waste time trying to “fix” their weaknesses. If you want a business you love, focus on what you are brilliant at. As a Virtual Assistant, you are part of a community built on collaboration. Use it. Join supportive networks like the VA Membership to find people who thrive on the tasks you hate. Focus on your zone of genius and collaborate to fill the gaps.
Building a business you love is pointless if nobody wants to buy what you’re selling. Research your market. Ask other VAs what services are in high demand or where the gaps are. Build real relationships with your clients and ask for feedback. When you focus on providing solutions they actually want, your business becomes sustainable.
The VA industry is vast and varied. You do not have to fit a certain mould or offer a specific package just because “everyone else is doing it.” You can be as niched as you like. Whether you want to specialise in a specific industry or a technical skill set, you are free to build a business on your terms, not someone else’s.
Waiting until you feel “ready” is a stalling tactic. It’s a new direction, so you are naturally going to feel a bit out of your depth. Take the leap anyway. Trust your background and your resilience. Use your professional networks to keep you motivated, but take that first step now.
It doesn’t matter how fast you go, provided you don’t stop. Take the pressure off yourself. What matters is taking “baby steps” every single day. Whether it’s five minutes of research, a post on LinkedIn, or drafting a sales page, these small actions compound into a business.
Even the most confident individuals deal with “mind monkeys” when they go solo. Your own fears and worries will be your biggest blockers. Be a work in progress. If your mindset is holding you back, seek out a VA business mentor or a group of peers who understand the reality of the role and can help you push through.
You need people who “get it.” When you are starting out, the VA Momentum Course provides the blueprint and the hand-holding you need. As you grow, move into a peer mentoring environment like the VA Membership. You need access to people who can offer clarity when you’re stuck and celebration when you win. Not everyone in your “real life” will understand why you left a stable 9-5, so find the people who do.
Working for yourself is a marathon with no finish line. It will be frustrating and it will be exhausting at times. That is why you must appreciate the opportunity you have created for yourself. Celebrate every win, no matter how small.
If you are ready to get started and want a straight-talking, supportive community to help you, check out the VA Momentum Course if you are at the beginning, or the VA Membership if you are already on your way. Both are designed for VAs who want to build a serious business without the fluff.
