Planning social media to get you through the summer holidays

planning social media to get you through the summer holidays

Social media can be a massive drain on your time. As a Virtual Assistant, time is your most precious resource, especially when you are trying to cut back your hours for the summer holidays. But you cannot simply vanish if you want your business to grow. You need to stay present, relevant, and noticed.

The answer isn’t winging it or staying tethered to your phone while you are at the beach with your family. The answer is a disciplined, no-nonsense plan.

The Foundation: You Need a Plan

Planning social media starts with a clear strategy. What do you want your brand to say? Which services are you pushing right now? If you do not have a yearly marketing plan in place, you are already behind the curve. While big agencies have complex formulas, you just need a fix that works for the next few weeks.

Set Your Summer Goals

Be direct with yourself. What is the objective for the summer?

  • Do you want to sign new clients?

  • Are you looking to raise interaction and likes?

  • Or are you looking to achieve a consistent presence until you are back in the autumn?

Decide which platforms actually matter to your business and focus your energy there.

Audit Your Content Options

Content should be a mix of your own expertise and curated value. In 2026, the algorithm rewards authenticity over polished perfection. Do not overcomplicate it.

  • Products and Services: Start here. If you are promoting a specific package, pencil it in. If not, promote your standard services and your lead magnet.

  • Existing Blog Posts: Your blog is a goldmine. Repurpose old, popular posts. Pull out tips and quotes to create fresh statuses or graphics. If you have completed the VA Momentum Course, you know how vital it is to show up as an authority.

  • Focus on Evergreen Content: When scheduling weeks in advance, avoid news-jacking. Stick to timeless problems your clients face. This ensures your content remains relevant regardless of when it is seen.

  • Influencer Insights: Share valuable content from experts in your niche. It positions you as someone who is well-connected and informed.

Batch Your Creation

Once you know what you are saying, create the visuals in one sitting. Use tools like Canva to create a few standard templates. Having a consistent look saves time and reinforces your brand. Swap out the text and images, and you are done.

The “Engagement Hour” and Safety Net

A scheduled feed can look like a broadcast channel rather than a social one. To prevent this without ruining your holiday:

  • Set Up Auto-Responders: Use automated Away messages on Facebook and Instagram. Explicitly state that you are on reduced summer hours and provide a clear date for when they can expect a response.

  • The Weekly Engagement Hour: Schedule just one hour per week to reply to comments and engage with three key prospects. This keeps the algorithm happy while keeping you offline for the other 167 hours of the week.

Schedule and Disconnect

You must use a scheduling platform if you want a real holiday. Use the built-in tools for Facebook or third-party schedulers like Tailwind, Smarterqueue for other platforms. Drip-feeding your content over the summer means your business stays visible while your phone stays in your bag.

Planning in advance is the only way to survive the summer holidays without burnout. Get into the habit of planning quarterly so you are never caught off guard. You can find all my recommended tools on the Resources page of the VA Training Academy.
