Do you need childcare if you work from home as a VA?

do you need childcare if you work from home

Working from home offers some significant financial advantages. When you first launch your business, the prospect of saving on childcare costs is a major draw. But is cutting out childcare a wise move, and is it truly possible to run a professional service while looking after children?

The topic of childcare often sparks debate. Some see working from home as the ultimate solution to rising costs. Others view childcare as a non negotiable requirement for business growth. This decision must not be based solely on your bank balance. There are several factors to weigh up before you commit to an arrangement.

The emotional element

You must be honest about your motivations. Did you start this business to be more present for your children? Perhaps you plan to work only when they are asleep or on specific days dedicated to the business. You might also be dealing with the guilt of feeling like a bad parent if you choose to put your business first for a few hours. Acknowledge these feelings, but do not let them cloud your professional judgement.

The practical reality

Can you realistically provide a high level of service to your clients with children in the house? Some people can work in short bursts, but most of us work better with zero distractions. Consider whether childcare would allow you to focus more effectively on your business during set hours, leaving you free to focus entirely on your family later. Your children may also benefit more from structured play or socialisation than from watching you stare at a laptop screen.

The financial impact

If you choose to use childcare, look for ways to make it work for your budget. You do not always need full time nursery care. Could family members help for a day or two? Could you set up a reciprocal arrangement with another working parent?

Ask yourself this: if you had dedicated childcare, could you take on more clients and increase your profit enough to cover the cost? If the answer is yes, childcare becomes an investment in your growth rather than just an expense.

Ultimately, this is a personal decision. People will always offer their opinions, but the only right answer is the one that works for you, your children, and your business.

What are your thoughts on childcare and working from home? If you have already made your decision, what was the deciding factor?
