Wondering what else a teacher can do? Discover how to pivot from the classroom to a high-value VA career using the transferable skills you already possess.
It’s 4:00 PM on a Sunday, and that familiar, heavy knot starts tightening in your stomach. You aren’t thinking about the children or the joy of a “lightbulb moment”; you’re thinking about the endless lesson planning, data entry the shifting goalposts of the latest school inspection framework, and the sheer volume of “extras” that have slowly eroded your love for the job. We’ve all been there.
Or if you’ve found yourself Googling “What else can a teacher do?” at 11:00 PM on a Tuesday, you’ve likely seen the term Virtual Assistant (VA) pop up.
But if you’re like most of the teachers I talk to, your first thought is probably: “I’m just a teacher. I don’t have ‘business’ skills. Who would hire me?”
I want to clear something up immediately: You aren’t “starting from scratch.” In fact, as a teacher, you are already a master of operations. The online business world is currently starving for the specific, disciplined, and educational approach that only a trained educator can bring.
In my Teacher to VA Transferable Skills Guide, I break down exactly how your classroom mastery translates into high-ticket business services. Here is a snippet of what most teachers don’t realise they already have:
The Architect of Order: In school, nothing happens without a system (think registration, fire drills and arts afternoons). In business, this is called Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Visionary CEOs are often chaotic they need your ability to build the infrastructure that makes their business repeatable.
The Master of “The Pivot”: When the tech fails or a lesson isn’t landing, you pivot in seconds. In the digital world, software changes overnight. Your “Solution-Finder” mindset is a premium asset to this role.
Adaptive Communication: You can shift your tone from a 5-year-old to a frustrated parent to a Board of Governors in a single morning. This “Chameleon” ability is a high-level leadership skill in business.
It’s also worth remembering that your specific background brings unique advantages to the table. An Early Years or Primary teacher often brings incredible multi-tasking and creative content delivery skills (Canva is just your new laminator!).
Conversely, a Deputy Head or Head often has deep experience in analytical data tracking, complex stakeholder management, and high-level compliance, skills that six and seven-figure entrepreneurs are desperate to pay for.
Over the past 12 years of coaching and mentoring Virtual Assistants, I’ve seen many of my clients come from the teaching background and yes there are new trainers popping up specifically for teachers but I am lucky enough to say that I have supported a number of award winning ex-teacher VAs. The training we offer gets tailored to the VA business you are trying to create. As first and foremost you are going to need to be a business owner – and so our courses teach you to be that but to recognise and utilise your strengths.
“Do I have the right ‘business’ qualifications to be a VA?” You already hold a degree and a PGCE (or equivalent); that is definitive proof of your ability to master complex information and deliver results. In the online business world, your pedagogical discipline, the ability to plan, execute, and review, is far more valuable than a generic business certificate.
“What if the technology changes too fast for me to keep up?” This is where your greatest strength lies: Teachers are the ultimate lifelong learners. Your entire career has been built on mastering new curricula, adapting to new assessment frameworks, and integrating new classroom technologies on the fly. You don’t just “tolerate” change; you have the academic curiosity to master it. Whether it’s AI, new CRM systems, or evolving social platforms, your “forensic curiosity” means you will always be one step ahead of the curve. Or the years, I have seen VAs who come from a teaching background niche and specialise in services that are very system or tech heavy.
If you’re tired of being undervalued and over-worked, it’s time to audit your skills and see how they relate to the UK VA industry. I’ve put together a comprehensive Guide specifically for teachers looking to escape teaching and become a VA.
It’s time to stop “just teaching” and start leading in a space that rewards your brain, not just your patience.
