Your business card needs to tell the story of your business. That is not an easy task when you are talking about a piece of card only a few inches wide! The choice of font, colours, wording, and texture all work together to communicate your brand. But in our high tech world, a question remains: do you even need one?
In a world saturated with digital noise, the physical business card is making a massive comeback. People are tired of digital friction. While you can use QR codes, digital transfer apps, or even expensive metal cards, nothing replaces the human touch of a physical exchange.
A business card is a tangible reminder of a face to face conversation. Whether you are at a networking event or a social function, it remains the most efficient way to pass your details to another person and ensure they actually retain the information. Handing over a card shows you are a professional who is prepared and serious about your venture.
You might be tempted by odd shapes or oversized designs to “stand out,” but my advice is to stay traditional. Stick to the standard size and shape. Why? Because a standard card fits into wallets, card holders, and pockets. If your card is an awkward shape, it will likely end up in the bin because it is too difficult to store. Have white space so people can also write notes on them about where they met you or an action they promised to do.
Do not cut corners on your printing. There are plenty of cheap online companies that offer thin, flimsy cards, but ask yourself: is that reflective of your company? A thin card suggests a “thin” business. Invest in the best quality card stock you can afford. It should feel substantial in the hand.
When designing your cards, use both sides to maximise space, but do not feel pressured into expensive extras like Spot UV. While Spot UV can create an impact by highlighting certain areas with varnish, it can double the cost. I have Spot UV over my logo on VACT and on Yes Mortgage Services – it really makes the logo’s pop!
Personally, I prefer a matte finish over a shiny varnish. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to write a quick note about a new contact on their business card only for the ink to smudge or fail to grip because of a glossy coating. A card you can write on is a card that stays useful.
If you are designing your own cards, do not let your creative juices run riot. Stick to the essentials: name, contact number, email, and website. Your logo should be the most prominent element. Limit your colour palette to two or three colours to avoid a cluttered look, and ensure your font is clear and legible. If a prospect has to squint to read your email address, you have already lost.
A few years ago, there was a lot of noise about video business cards with built in screens. While they offer a striking impression for speakers or actors, they never truly took off for the average business owner. They are expensive, bulky, and often impractical. If you do use them, keep a stock of traditional cards for everyday networking.
Business cards remain an essential tool for any Virtual Assistant. They signify quality, ethics, and professional readiness. If you are looking to build a business with these high standards, the VA Momentum Course will give you the foundations you need to market yourself with total confidence.
What are your thoughts? Are you a fan of the traditional card, or have you moved entirely to digital? Personally I like to keep business cards in a rolodex – so that I can easily find one – with whatever notes I scribbled on it!
Amanda Johnson is not just a mentor; she is a catalyst for transformation in the Virtual Assistant industry, helping professionals not only start but scale their businesses to new heights.
