Back to School: Time to Get Real About Your Business Goals

The new term is nearly here. While your children are dealing with the mixed bag of excitement and nerves that comes with a new school year, you have a different opportunity. The end of the summer holidays marks the transition from survival mode back into growth mode.

This is the perfect window to sharpen your focus and push hard toward the end of the year. But before you dive back into your old routine, you need to conduct a brutal audit of your goals. Do not just carry on with the same plan you had in January; things change. Use this simple, no-nonsense process to review where you are and where you are going.

Acknowledge Your Successes

We are often so busy looking at the next mountain that we forget to see how far we have already climbed. Stop. Take an hour to write down every single win you have had this year. Whether it is signing a new client, mastering a piece of software, or completing the VA Momentum Course, get it on paper. Recognising your progress builds the confidence needed for the next quarter.

Question Your Desires

Look at your outstanding goals. Be honest: do you still want them? We often cling to objectives because we feel we should want them, not because they actually serve our business or our lives. If a goal no longer lights a fire under you or fits your current lifestyle, it is dead weight.

Edit Your List

Now is the time to be ruthless. If a goal is no longer relevant, cross it off. If new opportunities have emerged over the summer that align better with your vision, add them. Your to-do list should be a living document, not a museum of old intentions.

Make Practical Adjustments

Life happens. Maybe a project took longer than expected, or your capacity changed. Review your timescales. Do you need to push a deadline back? Or, now that the children are back in school, can you accelerate a launch? Adjust the numbers and the dates to reflect your current reality.

Step Up or Step Away

Ask yourself what habits are serving you and which are holding you back. Stepping up might mean finally getting your head around a new social media platform or being more assertive with your pricing. Stepping away means cutting out the fluff. Stop scrolling aimlessly or letting “procrastilearning” get in the way of actual billable work.

Decide Who You Need to Be

To reach your end of year targets, you might need to shift your mindset. You do not need to judge your past self, but you do need to decide who the “Term Four” version of you is. Is she more disciplined? Is she more courageous? Align your actions with the person who has already achieved those goals.

This process is about more than just a checklist. It is about ensuring your habits and your mindset are actually pointing in the right direction. The holidays are over; it is time to get back to work.
