Become a Virtual Assistant – what steps should you take?

10th May 2026

 become a virtual assistant

Are you an existing PA or secretary looking to branch out on your own as a Virtual Assistant? Maybe you are in the process of being made redundant or want to work from home to be with your children. Whatever your reasons, you have decided it is the best option for you. So, what do you do now?

Becoming a Virtual Assistant requires more than just administrative skills. It requires a business owner mindset. Here is a direct, no-nonsense list of the steps you must take to turn your decision into a reality.

Step 1: Do not quit your day job yet

This might sound counterintuitive, but it is common sense. The last thing you need when building a business is the stress of worrying about essential bills. If possible, make the transition smooth and financially stable over a set period. Commit to a timescale and move to the next step.

Step 2: Get clear on your finances

Do not guess your numbers. Review your budget and identify where to cut back. Ideally, you should have at least six months of income saved before you make the leap. You also need funds set aside for start up costs and professional training.

Step 3: Allocate dedicated time

You must treat your business like a business from day one. When will you work on it? Whether it is early mornings or after the children are in bed, you need a routine. If your finances allow, consider reducing your hours at your current job to focus on your venture. Using this time for training now ensures you are ready when the clients start arriving.

Step 4: Decide on your business strategy

A plan is not optional. You need to clarify your business ideas, identify your ideal clients, and set firm income goals. This is also the time to handle the legalities, such as your business structure and your name.

Step 5: Find reputable training

You likely have the administrative skills, but running a business is a different beast. Do not waste time and money trying to figure it out alone through trial and error. Find a reputable training company that offers a proven track record, CPD Accreditation, and comprehensive support.

The best training covers everything from strategy and technology to client management and financial planning. Here at the VA Training Academy, we have helped thousands of VAs launch successful businesses through both our free resources and our paid courses. We provide the mentoring and ongoing support you need to move from employee to business owner. Take a look around our website as your first step toward professional freedom.
