Stop Being Complacent: Is Your VA Business Actually Meeting Client Needs?

The Virtual Assistant industry is growing but it is not saturated.  More people recognise the value of our work, and that demand is a win for everyone. However, growth often breeds complacency.

It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking your services are a “set and forget” deal. You might assume that because there is always a need for admin support, you never need to change. That is a mistake. If you want to scale a sustainable business, you must evolve.

Are you selling what your clients actually want (and need)?

Most VAs start by researching competitors and mirroring their packages. While that is a logical starting point, it is not a long-term strategy. Your clients do not just want a carbon copy of another VA; they want your specific expertise and your unique approach.

You must also consider the specific needs of your clients. They are not a monolith. They have unique software requirements, industry-specific hurdles, and varying goals. If you are only offering “standard” support, you are likely leaving gaps in their business and money on the table.

Think beyond your original box

The services you launched with might not be the ones that take you to the next level. As your skills grow and you gain new qualifications, your business should reflect that growth.

You may have started as a generalist but found a niche that suits your strengths. If you do not regularly review your business, you will miss these opportunities to pivot. I am a firm advocate of the regular business review. It is the only way to assess what you have achieved and, more importantly, where you are heading.

(Have a read of the book Range by David Epstein – I will add a link to it in my Amazon recommended reading list – it’s really refreshing.)

Listen more than you speak

The simplest way to know what your clients want is to ask them. Do not guess. Use polls, surveys, and feedback sessions to find out exactly where their frustrations lie.

Pay attention to social media and industry forums. What are people complaining about? What tasks are they struggling to outsource? Those frustrations are your new service offerings.

Growth happens when you stop assuming and start listening. When you engage with your market, you stop selling “at” people and start providing the tailored solutions they are ready to buy.

Take the next step

Building a business is simple, but it is rarely easy. If you have been in the game for a while and feel stuck on how to level up, I have created a space to help.
