Too many VAs, and business owners in general, believe they are working towards success when really, they are just being busy. Time gets swallowed up creating pretty graphics, scrolling social media, and learning new skills, rather than doing the activities that genuinely move the business forward.
These activities are not without value. But if they are taking up the bulk of your time, or being used as a way to avoid putting yourself out there, you are not holding yourself accountable to the success you say you want.
I don’t know about you but I feel a little been seen here!
Here is what real accountability looks like in practice.
If you want to take your business seriously, you need a clear plan. That means knowing where you are headed and exactly what it will take to get there. Set out your goals for the quarter and the year. Plan your products and services, including any launches. Yes, VAs can absolutely have launches too. Build an editorial calendar so you know what content needs creating and when. Have a clear plan for how you are going to get visible in front of the right audience. Treat your business like a business.
If you want your business to succeed, you need to push past any fear or discomfort around actually selling your services. Income-generating activities should take up the majority of your time and focus while you are in a growth stage.
That includes:
If your audience is not on a particular platform, you should not be either. The right place for you to be is wherever your ideal clients are actually spending their time, whether that is online, offline, or a mix of both.
Are you genuinely committing to the work required to get where you want to be? Success means rolling your sleeves up. The key is making sure that effort goes towards the right activities, guided by your plan and editorial calendar, rather than whatever feels easiest in the moment.
You need to know what is actually working for you and your audience, and that comes from monitoring your results and asking for honest feedback from your clients. There is little point pouring time and energy into content your audience does not engage with, or spending money on advertising on a platform your audience simply is not using. Track it, so you actually know.
Once you are monitoring your results properly, making changes becomes far easier. Give your work time to settle before judging it, but once you have enough data, be willing to tweak or change course where needed.
Without you, there is no business. Set clear boundaries between work and home life. Build in downtime. Look after your physical and mental wellbeing, including sleep, food, movement and proper breaks. This is not a nice-to-have. It is what keeps you well enough to run a successful business in the first place.
Too many VAs spend their time on activities that look productive but do not actually move their business forward. If that sounds familiar, now is the time to make a change.
Start by being gentle with yourself. No blame, just an honest look at what needs to shift. Then use the steps above to get refocused on a plan that actually takes you towards the success you are working for.
Running a business is not always easy, and it is not always easy to do alone.
If you are looking to get your VA business off the ground with a proven, practical approach, the VA Momentum Course will take you from strategy through to managing Associates, with the confidence and commercial know-how to back it up.
If you are already established but want consistent support, honest conversation, and a space away from hustle culture and content overload, VA Membership might be the better fit. It is not about more webinars or one-upmanship. It is about authenticity, accountability, and helping you build the business and life you actually set out to create.
And if you want focused, structured input on your business goals a few times a year, our quarterly VA Mastermind gives you that dedicated space to plan, problem-solve and stay accountable alongside other VAs. You don’t have to have done any of my other courses to come to the VA Mastermind days – I would like you to commit to coming 4 times a year where possible to really help you stay accountable.
