Get your VA business summer ready, with a mid-year review

get your va business summer ready with a mid year review

How is your VA business going?

It sounds like a simple enough question. But as any business owner knows, it is one of the most loaded questions you can be asked, or ask yourself. Depending on where things stand, it either fills you with quiet dread or lights you up completely.

The difference between those two responses usually comes down to one thing: whether you actually know how your business is performing, or whether you have been too busy keeping up with the day-to-day to stop and look at the bigger picture.

That is exactly why a mid-year review matters. We are at the halfway point of 2026. The summer break is approaching, the pace is about to shift, and right now, before the school holidays arrive and the weeks blur into one another, is the ideal time to sit down, be honest with yourself, and make sure the second half of the year is set up for success.

Here is how to do it properly.

1. Audit your tools and technology

Start with the practical. Go through every subscription and tool you are currently paying for and ask yourself three questions. Am I actually using this? Is it still relevant to how my business works now? Is it worth what I am paying for it?

It is surprisingly easy to accumulate monthly subscriptions for tools you signed up for with good intentions and never fully implemented. A mid-year review is the perfect opportunity to cut what is not earning its place and make sure your tech stack is genuinely serving you rather than just quietly draining your account.

In fairness, I encourage you to do this task quarterly.

2. Review your goals

Pull out whatever you set at the start of the year. Read it properly. Then be honest about where you actually are.

Have you achieved some of what you set out to do? Good. What new goals will you set to keep pushing forward? Are there goals that no longer reflect where you want to take the business? Adjust them. Are there goals you have been quietly avoiding because they feel uncomfortable or uncertain? Those are probably the ones that matter most.

Your goals should stretch you without being so vague they give you nothing to work towards. If yours have drifted into the background, now is the time to bring them back into focus.

Again, this is something I encourage you to do on a quarterly basis – so that we can keep momentum moving forwards.

3. Assess your own performance honestly

This is the section most people skip, and it is the most important one.

Have you helped or hindered your business in the first half of this year? That is not a question designed to make you feel bad. It is a question designed to give you useful information.

If your mindset has been working against you, or your motivation has been inconsistent, or your time management has been chaotic, acknowledge it. You cannot fix something you are not willing to look at. What needs to change in the second half of the year? Do you need more structure in your working week? A better routine? Support with accountability?

On the other hand, if you have had a strong first half, do not just move on without asking what made it work. What can you carry forward? What should you double down on? And what is quietly draining your energy that you need to either outsource or let go of entirely?

4. Look at your systems and processes

Summer often means a shift in pace, whether that is because your own children are home, your clients are taking time off, or simply because the rhythm of the working week changes. That makes it a very good time to make sure your business can function smoothly without you being constantly at your desk.

Where are the gaps in your processes? What relies too heavily on you being present and available? What could be automated, templated, or documented so that things do not fall apart the moment you step back?

Getting your systems in order before summer arrives means you can actually enjoy the break, rather than spending it fielding messages and catching up on things that should have been handled already.

5. Review your marketing and visibility

Finally, look at your marketing with fresh eyes. Do you have a clear plan for the next six months? Do you know what you will be promoting, when, and where?

A lot of VAs let their marketing go quiet over the summer and then scramble to rebuild momentum in September. Do not be one of them. The VAs who stay consistently visible, even at a lighter pace during the summer months, are the ones who hit the ground running in autumn rather than spending six weeks trying to get back to where they were.

Decide now what your marketing will look like over the summer. What can you batch and schedule in advance? What content can you prepare before the holidays arrive? A modest, consistent presence is infinitely better than silence followed by a flurry of activity.  As a parent this one has saved me over the summer months.

Use the time you have now

You still have time before the summer break changes the rhythm of everything. Use it. A mid-year review does not need to take a whole day. A focused two hours with honest answers and a clear action list at the end is enough to change the trajectory of your second half.

The VAs who finish the year strongly are rarely the ones who had the easiest start. They are the ones who stopped, looked honestly at where they were, and made deliberate decisions about what came next.

Want support to make the second half count?

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do for your business is stop working in it for a day and work on it instead. The VA Mastermind Quarterly Days are structured around exactly that. The morning covers your goals, what is getting in the way, and a coaching session built around the issues you submit in advance. After a proper lunch break, the afternoon moves into a Virtual Board of Directors style session where you bring your live business challenges and work through them with the group, followed by hot seat coaching that is focused, personalised, and consistently one of the most powerful parts of the day. You leave with a 90-day plan that is grounded in your reality, not a list of vague intentions that fade by Tuesday. If you want to earn more without working more hours, attract premium clients, get clear on your marketing, or simply give yourself the space to think strategically about your business, this is the day for it.

For ongoing training, accountability, and a community of VAs who are serious about building businesses that work, the VA Membership gives you the structure and support to keep moving forward through the second half of the year and beyond.

Or if you want to talk through where you are right now, book a call and let us have that conversation.
