If you have been in business for a while, you may feel the time is right to raise your prices. However, you might worry about what your existing customers will think or concern yourself with having to justify the increase.
To raise your rates effectively, you first need to convince yourself that you are doing the right thing. The tips below will not only help you convince your clients, they will also boost your confidence. Use this checklist to remind yourself of the significant value you bring to every business you support.
The best way to start any conversation about money is to remind the client of the value you have already brought to the table. How have you helped their business grow? What has your assistance enabled them to achieve that they could not do alone? Remind them of the problems you have solved and the time you have given back to them.
When you explain your intent to raise prices, do so in a confident, non-defensive way. Let them know how this increase allows you to better serve them.
Perhaps you are limiting your client base to offer more tailored, high level support. Maybe you are expanding your team to ensure faster turnaround times. Or perhaps you have simply been overdelivering and need your rates to reflect your years of experience and quality of work. Whatever the reason, be honest and direct.
Clients appreciate feeling valued. Consider offering an updated version of a package they currently use or an additional one off bonus. This helps the client see the immediate benefits of staying with you through the transition.
Always put your price increase in writing and give your clients ample notice. I recommend at least one month. This professional courtesy allows them to adjust their budgets. It also serves as a prompt for potential customers on the fence to sign up now before the new rates apply.
Remind your customers that you value their business and look forward to growing the relationship. However, give them the space to voice concerns. If a client is truly uncomfortable with the increase, offer to help them find another provider better suited to their budget. This no-nonsense approach shows that you respect your own worth and their business needs.
Raising your prices does not have to be daunting. By following this advice you can increase your income while maintaining strong, honest professional relationships. If you need help refining your business strategy or finding the confidence to charge what you are worth, read the blog how to tell your clients you are raising your rates to get a template of the email to send to clients.
