It is natural to want your business to succeed. In the digital age, we have front-row seats to the lives of industry experts and “gurus” who appear miles ahead of us. We see the polished photos, the income claims, and the curated lifestyle. If we are being honest, it is easy to want a piece of that for ourselves.

Used correctly, that can be a powerful motivator. It can be the fuel that keeps you going when the day-to-day reality of running a VA business gets difficult. However, there is a flip side. Looking at others can become a major sticking point if your goals are not actually in alignment with who you are.

The Myth of “Having It All”

When you see someone on social media who seems to have the perfect balance of success, money, and family, it is easy to assume that “having it all” is the source of their happiness.

It isn’t.

Usually, one of two things is happening behind those posts. Either that person has identified exactly what matters to them and is genuinely happy because they have secured it, or they are selling an illusion. Many people project a “perfect” lifestyle specifically to sell a product that promises to help you achieve the same.

Define Your Own Version of Success

You do not need to “have it all.” You need to have what is important to you.

Success looks different for everyone. For many of my trainees, it means working from home, choosing their own hours, and being present when their children get home from school. They want to cover the bills and have enough left over for family holidays. For others, success might be scaling an agency or working as a high-level executive assistant to international clients.

You must understand your own values. It is a waste of your energy to push toward a version of success that includes things you don’t even care about. If you don’t value a laptop on a beach, why are you making it a goal?

Authenticity Over Appearance

At the end of the day, you want to be happy with what you do and how you live. That requires a level of honesty and straight talking with yourself.

Dig deep. What are your actual skills? What brings you alive? Once you know your values, implement them into your business model. Stop trying to be the “pink and fluffy” version of a VA if that isn’t who you are. When your business reflects your authentic self, you will find the fulfilment you’ve been working for.
