Every business owner, irrespective of industry wants to grow and prosper, and VAs are no different. However, we often inadvertently sabotage the very success we seek by letting our fears and worries dictate our actions.
One of the most significant barriers is the fear of success itself. It is rarely discussed because many feel uncomfortable admitting it to others, or even to themselves. If you are going to scale your business, you must learn how to identify this fear and deal with it directly.
Fear of success rarely looks like outright terror. Instead, it shows up in your daily habits. Here are the most common symptoms:
Procrastination: This manifests as talking about big plans without taking action, staying busy with non-essential tasks, or failing to cross the finish line on important projects.
Feeling inadequate: You might struggle to make decisions, second-guess your expertise, or worry excessively about the opinions of others. This often leads to perfectionism, which is simply procrastination in a fancy suit.
Easy distractions: Working from home provides plenty of escapes, from housework to social media. If you find yourself constantly sidetracked by low-priority tasks or reorganising your filing system instead of pitching to clients, you are likely avoiding growth.
Identifying the problem is only half the battle. You must take active steps to move past it and reach your goals.
Clarify your vision: Write down exactly where you want your business to go. Who do you want to work with and why? Understand the person you need to become to manage that success. Define your values and ethics clearly so you can grow with integrity.
Focus on the positive: Practice the art of positivity daily. This is not about being “fluffy”; it is about the discipline of letting go of negative thoughts and distancing yourself from people who drain your energy.
Make friends with change: Growth is uncomfortable. Instead of fearing that discomfort, acknowledge it as a sign of expansion. Link that feeling to excitement rather than anxiety.
Carry your own spotlight: Many of us were taught not to brag, but in business, you must be your own advocate. Get comfortable stating what you do, who you help, and what you charge.
Secure professional support: Support is crucial when you are pushing past your comfort zone. A strong network provides the accountability you need to stay focused.
