Confidence is something we all possess, but as Virtual Assistants, we often cage it. We limit our self-belief to things others can measure—grades from past appraisals, awards, or external validation. We do this because we are terrified of appearing conceited or “big-headed.”
The truth is, real confidence is about trust in your own skin. You can learn to value your abilities and life generally without worrying about the gallery. Here are ten no-nonsense steps to improve how you view yourself and your business.
Stop waiting for a client to tell you that you did a good job. Commit to praising yourself. If you do not have positive thoughts about your own abilities, no one else will do it for you.
It sounds simple because it is. Approach your desk with a positive outlook. It costs nothing, but it sets the tone for every interaction you have with your clients and your family.
Do not just dive into your inbox. Spend a few minutes at the start of each day planning your actions. Visualise a productive day and set specific goals. Giving yourself this time ensures you are in control of your day, rather than your day controlling you.
Do not get bogged down in the “how” every single second. Focus on the desired outcome. Remind yourself how it will feel to hit that deadline or sign that new client. Results follow focus.
Comfort is the enemy of growth. Always look for ways to move forward, whether that is taking on a more complex project, mastering a new tool in the VA Momentum Course, or improving your personal boundaries.
Business is serious, but you do not have to be miserable. Look for the brighter side of things and acknowledge the blessings of working for yourself. If you are not enjoying the journey, what is the point?
You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Associate with people who lift you up and possess qualities you admire. Life is far too short to spend it with “energy vampires” who drag you down.
You do not have to be an expert in everything, but you must be willing to learn. Ask questions and seek to understand. An open mind finds solutions that a “know-it-all” mind misses every time.
Confidence is not just about you; it is about believing in others too. Have faith in the people you work with, whether they are associates or clients. Showing confidence in them often helps them find the confidence they lack in themselves.
At the end of the day, stop stewing. Let go of the niggles, the annoying emails, and the minor setbacks. Acknowledge them, then release them. Do not carry today’s baggage into tomorrow’s business.
Follow these steps and you will do more than just increase your confidence; you will find a level of positivity that makes running a business much easier. You will be lighter, more focused, and living in the moment.
Which of these steps hits home for you? Is there one you are struggling to implement? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
