Tips for staying on top of new VA trends

tips for staying on top of new va trends

In the Virtual Assistant world, standing still is the same as moving backwards. Whatever your niche, paying attention to the shift in the market is essential. However, staying “in the know” can feel like a full-time job in itself. How do you separate the genuine game-changers from the fleeting fads?

Here are my five no-nonsense tips for staying on top of VA trends and implementing them effectively.

1. Follow the Right Leaders (Not Everyone)

Find the industry leaders in your niche and watch what they are doing. But a word of caution: limit yourself to three or four. If you follow everyone, you will be buried under an avalanche of emails and webinars, resulting in “analysis paralysis.”

Choose your mentors wisely. Join their groups and attend their sessions, but don’t just be a “lurker.” Be an active member. Give value, share your own experiences, and ask intelligent questions. If you only ever take without giving back, you aren’t building a network; you’re just consuming content.

I generally encourage new VAs to join the Society of Virtual Assistants as a community member, my free group – the VA Help Desk, then maybe one other group – it really is worth remembering that too many and you will cause paralysis and procrastination!

2. Monitor Industry News

Whether it is a digital publication or a professional journal, you need to stay informed. In 2026, the big conversation is the shift towards “Hybrid VAs”, professionals who seamlessly blend human judgment with AI tools to drive 40% more efficiency. If you aren’t reading about how UK SMEs are evolving, you can’t position yourself as the solution to their problems.

3. Keep Your Ear to the Ground

Social media moves fast. Keep an eye on which platforms are gaining traction and which are fading away. For example, years ago people were excited about Periscope; today, that technology has been absorbed into other platforms or replaced by high-end live-streaming tools like StreamYard or YouTube Live.

The lesson? Don’t get attached to the tool; get attached to the function. If live video is trending, find the most stable, professional way to deliver it for your clients. Be ready to adapt and react before the market becomes saturated.

Personally, I encourage my clients to be on LinkedIn and at least one meta platform.

4. Leverage Technology

You don’t have to manually search for news every day. Use technology to do the heavy lifting for you. Tools like Feedly remain excellent for aggregating RSS feeds, while Google Alerts can notify you the second your niche is mentioned online.

In 2026, we also have AI-powered research tools like Microsoft Copilot or Perplexity that can summarise weekly industry shifts in seconds. Use these tools to stay informed so you can spend more time billable and less time scrolling.

5. Have the Guts to Act

Finally, do not be afraid to be an early adopter. Implementing a new trend early doesn’t just make you look innovative; it establishes you as an industry leader. When you show a client a new, more efficient way to manage their business, you aren’t just a “task-doer”, you become a strategic partner.
