Reviewing your goals

Why You Must Review Your Goals Every 90 Days

When it comes to reviewing goals, too many business owners wait until December. That is a mistake. Reviewing your goals regularly ensures you stay on target. There is no better time to check your progress than right now.

Do not wait until things go wrong to take a look at your plan. One of the biggest hurdles for a Virtual Assistant is losing direction. You might find yourself halfway down the wrong path or realising the results you crave are not materialising. By the time you notice, you have wasted time, effort, and money.

This leads to a crash in commitment. You feel demotivated and tempted to pack the whole thing in. As a mentor, I see this often, and it is entirely avoidable.

There is no right or wrong way to capture your goals.

You do not need a formal document or a fancy app if that does not suit you. It can be as simple as a piece of paper or a notebook. The method matters less than the act of writing them down and keeping them visible.

The Strategy: From 10 Years to 90 Days

To make a goal work, you need to break it down. Start with the big picture and work backwards:

  • Identify where you want to be in 10 years.

  • Whittle that down to 5 years.

  • Refine it to a 3 year plan.

  • Determine exactly what needs to happen in 1 year.

Once you have your 1 year target, break it into 90 day segments. This is your sweet spot. A year is too long to stay focused without a check in, but 90 days allows for intensive, focused action.

The 90 Day Review

You must review your progress every 90 days. This frequency allows you to spot wrong turns before they become a crisis. It gives you the chance to pivot. It is perfectly okay for your goals to change. If a goal no longer serves your business or your life, get rid of it or alter it.

When you sit down for your review, ask yourself these direct questions:

  • Is the end result still what I want, or has my direction shifted?

  • Am I actually moving forward, or just keeping busy?

  • What needs to change or be tweaked?

  • Have I acknowledged what I have achieved and celebrated those wins?

  • Are my goals broken into specific action steps?

  • What must be completed in the next 90 days?

  • Have I physically blocked out the time in my diary to do the work?

If you are serious about growth, stop treating your goals as a once a year event. Consistency beats intensity every time.

How often do you review your goals? Are you sticking to a plan or just winging it? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
