Procrastination is often described as the art of doing nothing. When you are an employee, it is obvious when you are slacking off. However, when you are running your own business, it is dangerously easy to spend an entire day being busy while actually procrastinating on the work that matters.
Procrastination is not just about avoiding work. It is the habit of carrying out less urgent or more pleasurable tasks instead of the ones you really need to do. This leads to missed deadlines, rushed outputs, and important tasks falling through the cracks. If you want to stop jeopardising your business success, you need to get a grip on your habits.
Often, procrastination is a symptom of overwhelm. If your list is a mess, your brain will naturally choose the path of least resistance. Look at your current list and ask yourself these questions:
Are these tasks prioritised?
Do I actually know how to complete them?
Do I need to break them down into smaller, manageable chunks?
Am I clear on the deadlines?
Do I have all the information required?
Are these tasks actually relevant and essential right now?
Once you have answered those questions, rewrite your list. A master list is a great place to dump ideas, but it is a terrible tool for daily productivity. Create a specific list for this week only. If it is not a priority for the next five days, it should not be on your desk. Keep your focus tight.
Be honest with yourself. Which tasks are you avoiding? To beat the habit, you must understand the cause. Ask yourself:
What am I afraid of? Is it a fear of failure, or perhaps a fear of success and the change that brings?
What emotion does this task trigger? If you feel a sense of dread, why?
What is the end result? Sometimes we avoid tasks because the outcome forces us out of our comfort zone.
Now that you know why you are stalling, decide what to do. You have three choices: do it, delegate it, or drop it. If a task is essential but you hate it, outsource it to another Virtual Assistant. If it is not essential, stop letting it take up mental space and delete it. Making a firm decision puts you back in control of your time.
The only way to kill procrastination is to move. If you are stuck, use a timer. Commit to just ten minutes of work on one specific task. Starting is the hardest part. Once you break the seal and see progress, you will find it much easier to build momentum.
In my VA Momentum Course, we focus heavily on the mindset and systems required to run a professional business. You cannot afford to hide behind busy work if you want to scale. Set your timer, pick one task, and get started now.
