Surviving the School Holidays: A No-Nonsense Guide for Virtual Assistants

Running a business from home is a challenge. Throw in the school holidays, and that challenge can feel like an uphill battle in a storm. Whether it is the six week summer stretch or a shorter half term, the shift in routine is enough to test even the most organised entrepreneur.

I am a veteran and a mother. I know that success comes down to planning, discipline, and being honest about what is actually possible. You do not need fluffy advice; you need a strategy to keep your business moving without neglecting your family.

Set Your Boundaries and Expectations

Clear boundaries are the backbone of a functional home office. You must decide on your working hours and stick to them. If you are half working and half parenting, you are failing at both.

If your children are old enough, have a direct conversation with them. Explain that when the office door is shut or the timer is on, you are at work. Once that timer goes off, you are all theirs. Put a schedule on the fridge where everyone can see it. Include the fun stuff, the clubs, and the quiet blocks. This prevents double booking and manages expectations for everyone involved.

Embrace Real Flexibility

Your standard nine to five might not survive the summer. Be prepared to adapt. This might mean hitting your desk at 5:00 AM before the house wakes up or catching up on tasks once the kids are in bed.

Flexibility also means having a backup plan. If a client emergency crops up or a planned outdoor activity is rained off, you need to be able to pivot without a meltdown. Control what you can, and adjust for what you cannot.

Focus on Quality, Not Just Quantity

When you are working, work. When you are with your children, be present. It is better to give your business two hours of intense, focused effort than six hours of distracted pottering. The same applies to your family. Give them your full attention so they feel valued, which often makes them more willing to give you the space you need later.

Ask for Backup

There is no prize for doing this entirely on your own. Admitting you need help is a sign of leadership, not weakness. Look into holiday clubs, swap childcare days with other self-employed parents, or call in the grandparents.

If external help is not an option, get smart with your resources. Save the engaging activities, like complex Lego sets or a specific film, for the times you absolutely must have an hour of uninterrupted focus.

Maintain Perspective

Stop the negative self-talk. Phrases like “I never get anything done” are usually lies we tell ourselves when we are tired. Keep a list of your wins. Even if you only cleared your inbox and finished one project, that is progress.

The school holidays are a season, not a permanent state of affairs. Plan forward, stay focused, and stop beating yourself up.

How do you handle the juggle? Do you rely on holiday clubs, or are you a member of the 5:00 AM club? Share your honest experiences in the comments.
