Master the art of selling your VA services, with confidence

master the art of selling your va services

When you think about selling, do you experience a feeling of dread? Do you wonder how on earth you are going to “convince” someone to hire you?

The truth is, you shouldn’t be convincing anyone. Selling your VA services is about alignment and problem-solving. If you change your approach, you will find it far more effective.

1. Change your mindset about selling

If you have a negative view of sales, you are likely picturing an arrogant door-to-door salesman or a pushy car dealer. That is a myth you need to discard.

Look at your own buying habits. What makes you want to spend money? Usually, it is a combination of want and need. Think about the last time you had a great retail experience. I recently went to Clarks to buy smart shoes. The assistant was welcoming and helpful; she listened to what I needed and presented ideas based on that. I bought two pairs and felt looked after, not “sold to.”

You never have to “sell yourself.” Instead, you present yourself as a professional with whom a client may wish to partner. Be yourself. You do not need to be assertive or arrogant to appear competent. People buy people. Remove the mask, drop the “salesperson” persona, and let your personality lead. There is always a client looking for exactly what you offer.

2. Boost your confidence through authenticity

If you constantly worry about your “performance” or compare yourself to other VAs, your confidence will tank. This lack of self-belief shows in your body language and the way you communicate. If you go into a call thinking you are too expensive, the client will pick up on that hesitation.

Flip the script. What if they love your passion? What if they see you as the missing piece of their team? What if your status as a new business owner is an advantage because you bring fresh ideas and a hunger to succeed? Change your internal dialogue and your external confidence will follow. Remember, confidence grows with action, not just thinking about it.

3. Step into the shoes of the potential client

Stop assuming you know what people want. Stop talking and start listening. The more you ask high-quality questions and actually listen to the answers, the more trust you build.

If you walk into a shop and a sales assistant pushes an item into your hands before you have even looked around, you will walk straight back out. The same applies here. Listen to their challenges, their “pain points,” and their aspirations. Only when you truly understand their situation can you offer a solution that fits.

4. Take the relationship to the next level

Buying a service is different from buying a product. After a discovery call, a prospect might need time to digest the information, check their budget, or compare you with other VAs.

Do not assume that a lack of an instant “yes” means a “no.” In most cases, you need consistent communication before a contract is signed. As the saying goes, it is about allowing people to get to know, like, and trust you.

There is research that says, people will say no four times before saying yes!

Be proactive. Follow up with a summary of your discussion and the solutions you proposed. Connect on LinkedIn. Share your newsletter or a relevant blog post. If you stay at the forefront of their mind, they will come to you when they are ready to buy. Be visible but not needy!

5. Charge your worth and communicate value

If you offer a discount the moment someone flinches at your price, you have immediately devalued your expertise. Forget what other VAs are charging; it is irrelevant to your business.

If you tell someone you charge £35 per hour for “admin,” it might sound expensive. However, if you explain the real benefits; the time you save them, the stress you remove, and the growth you enable that same £35 per hour looks like a very cost-effective investment. Learn to sell the result, not the task.
