The short answer: Yes, but not for the reasons you think.
The social media landscape has shifted. Platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn have moved toward sophisticated AI driven search. This means that while hashtags are no longer the magic pill for virality they were five years ago, they still serve a vital purpose as SEO signposts. They help the algorithms categorise your content and show it to the right people.
If you want to stay visible, you need to stop using hashtags like a teenager and start using them like a business strategist.
The old method of tagging for likes is dead. Today, hashtags are about searchability. When a potential client types “VA for accountants” into a search bar, your hashtags help ensure your post appears in those results. They act as index markers for the platform’s search engine.
Stop using massive hashtags like #business or #startup. Your content will be buried in milliseconds. Instead, double down on specific, intent based tags. If you have completed the VA Momentum Course, you know that positioning is everything. Use tags that reflect your specific expertise: think #LegalVAUK or #PropertyManagementVA.
The days of 30 hashtags in a hidden comment are over. Most platforms now prefer a smaller number of highly relevant tags. Aim for three to five specific tags that accurately describe the content of your post. If the tag does not directly relate to what you have written, leave it out. The algorithm rewards accuracy, not volume.
Social media algorithms are now smart enough to read the text in your images and the captions you write. This means your hashtags must align perfectly with your content. If you use #ProductivityTips but your post is a photo of your dog, the algorithm will flag it as irrelevant, and your reach will suffer.
The core of my ten step process still holds weight. You still need goals, you still need to avoid banned tags, and you still need to monitor what works. However, you must treat hashtags as a secondary tool to high quality, direct, and honest content.
The bottom line: Hashtags are a support act, not the main event. Update your approach and stop wasting time on vanity tags that do not bring in billable work.
