This blog is a departure from my usual format, but it is a necessary one. I have had many recent conversations with both new and experienced Virtual Assistants regarding their self-confidence—or lack thereof.
Confidence is often the missing ingredient between a VA who is “getting by” and one who is truly leading their business. Here are 21 no-nonsense tips to help you shift your mindset and take action.
Self-confidence comes from within. It has nothing to do with what others think or say about you, but everything to do with what you think of yourself. Ensure your self-perception is based on your own standards, not skewed by the words you imagine others are using to describe you.
Accept your achievements: Being humble is a trait, but denying your success is self-defeating. Learn to accept and even revel in your achievements, no matter how small.
Distinguish feelings from facts: Feelings are fleeting. Just because you feel unworthy in a moment does not mean you are unworthy. Keep perspective; the feeling will pass.
Act on your thoughts: Positive thinking is a start, but action makes it real. Think positive, then act on it.
Monitor your self-talk: The moment you identify a negative thought, replace it with a positive one. Make this a habit.
Focus on strengths: Accept your weaknesses and double down on your strengths. Perfection is a myth that serves no one.
Journal your thoughts: Analyse your internal dialogue to determine if your limitations are real or simply imagined.
Stack small wins: The more goals you achieve, the more you train your brain to expect success.
Redefine failure: Failure does not define you; it simply means a specific approach did not work. Shrug it off, learn the lesson, and move forward.
Curate your circle: Surround yourself with confident, capable people. Observe their actions and implement them into your own routine.
Prepare for the “Worst Case”: Consider the worst possible outcome and how you would manage it. Once you have a plan for the “worst,” you are free to focus on the “best.”
Dress for the job: Looking professional and feeling comfortable in your appearance elevates your self-esteem.
Use believable affirmations: Empty generic phrases are useless. For affirmations to work, they must be based on true, believable facts about your capabilities.
Build a “Victory Book”: Base your self-esteem on evidence. Gather your testimonials, thank you emails, and proof of competencies. When you doubt yourself, look at the facts.
Join a community: Demonstrate your abilities by joining professional groups. In the VA Membership, we share our weekly plans and celebrate our wins. Accountability breeds momentum.
Accept feedback properly: Learn to accept positive feedback without deflection. A simple “Thank you” is enough.
Allow yourself to feel pride: You are allowed to feel satisfaction in your skills and accomplishments. This nourishes your self-esteem.
Nurture your competence: Real confidence is built on your ability to learn and solve problems. Invest in your professional development.
Find your balance: Confidence is the belief in your ability to succeed. Too much can lead to risky choices; too little prevents you from starting. Aim for the middle ground.
Stop the comparison trap: Comparison is the thief of progress. Your Chapter 1 will never look like someone else’s Chapter 20. Focus on your own data and your own growth.
Set firm boundaries: Confidence is reflected in what you say “no” to. Saying no to the wrong clients or unrealistic demands reinforces your value and self-respect.
Practice being decisive: Indecision breeds anxiety. Start making small business decisions quickly and trust your gut. You can always pivot later if needed.
