It may surprise you to know that codependency isn’t something reserved for romantic couples. It shows up in business relationships more often than you might think. Whether you are working with clients or a coach, you need to be aware of the signs and deal with them early.
You can only fix what you can see. Certain habits lend themselves to codependency, and it is only when you address them that you can reclaim your independence. Here is how to avoid the codependency trap.
Setting boundaries is essential. It is not just about your job specification; it is about protecting your professional integrity. Clear boundaries set your “rules of business”—from your working hours to your communication methods. This prevents over-familiarity and ensures you maintain a high level of professionalism, even when a client tries to make their emergency your own.
Codependency and low self-esteem go hand in hand. When you lack confidence, you become a people-pleaser, constantly seeking reassurance. This leads to a perfectionism trap where you are afraid to make a move without a “green light” from someone else. You must learn to trust your intuition. Recent psychological research suggests that “self-efficacy”—your belief in your ability to succeed—is a greater predictor of business success than raw talent alone. Work on yours.
You must manage your own mental and physical health. When you improve your self-esteem, you react less to the whims of others. Listen to what your body is telling you. If you are constantly looking for approval, you will overwork yourself into the ground. If you are not sure what self-employment burnout looks like, take a read of this article on Medium.
You did not start a business to have someone else, or something else, tell you what to do. In 2026, we are seeing a rise in “AI-dependency,” where business owners are afraid to write a single email or make a strategic choice without asking a chatbot first.
While AI is a brilliant tool, it is a terrible CEO. It cannot feel your “gut instinct.” Whether it is a human mentor or an AI tool, use them for opinions and efficiency, but take ownership of the final decision. Over the years, I have had clients who would not even go to the loo without asking for permission! Remember, you are in charge. Take responsibility for your results.
Codependency can make you stick around far too long in a toxic arrangement. You might find yourself wanting to “fix” a client’s business or help them to the detriment of your own health. This often stems from wanting to feel needed rather than doing what is best for the business.
If you are more frustrated about a client’s lack of progress than they are, you have fallen into a codependent trap. Know when it is time to exit. Remind your clients that while you are there to support them, delegation does not abdicate them of their responsibilities as the owner.
Sometimes we cling to others because we are scared of the success we seek. If you find yourself over-relying on a coach or a tool to avoid taking a big leap, you are stalling. Real growth happens when you act independently.
By addressing these traits early, you protect your business and your sanity. If you need help boosting your confidence, setting boundaries, or practicing self-care, check out our related guides to help you take your VA business seriously.
