Let me tell you something I learned a long time before I ever started a business: the riskiest thing you can do is nothing at all.
I spent years in the military, where hesitation costs you. You assess, you plan, you act. You don’t get to sit on a decision until it feels perfectly safe, because it never will. Running a VA business is no different. The opportunity in front of you right now will not wait politely while you build up the confidence to take it.
So here’s the question I want you to sit with for a minute.
Imagine yourself years from now. Older. Sitting with your kids, or your grandkids, telling them about your working life. What are you telling them?
Are you telling them about the client you were too scared to pitch to, the course you never signed up for, the niche you never committed to because what if it didn’t work? Or are you telling them about the business you built because you kept saying yes to the next right step, even when it terrified you?
You’ll almost certainly have made mistakes along the way. Good. That’s not a warning sign, that’s proof you were actually doing something. The VAs I’ve coached who’ve built solid, sustainable businesses aren’t the ones who avoided every wrong turn. They’re the ones who took the turn, learned fast, and kept moving.
Which story do you want to be telling?
If I asked you right now what’s stopping you from going after what you want, I’d put money on it not being a lack of opportunity. It’s far more likely to be one of these:
Procrastination. Negative self-talk. A confidence problem you’ve quietly been carrying for months, maybe years. A long list of perfectly reasonable-sounding justifications for why now isn’t the right time. And that internal mental drama that starts before you’ve even taken the first step.
Underneath most of it, if you’re honest, it’s fear…
Fear of failing publicly. Fear of putting yourself out there and being ignored. Fear that everyone else in the VA world is further ahead, better trained, more established. Fear of the competition. Fear that you’ll ask for the work and hear nothing back. Fear that you’re simply not good enough yet.
Take a breath. You must be exhausted maintaining that list.
Here’s the thing about opportunity in this industry right now: it hasn’t disappeared, it’s shifted. Clients are more selective, budgets are tighter, and AI has changed what business owners expect a VA to be able to do. That’s not bad news. That’s clarity. The VAs who are struggling are the ones still offering exactly what they offered three years ago. The VAs who are thriving are the ones who noticed the shift and moved with it, into higher value support, into specialist skills, into being the person a business owner trusts with judgement, not just tasks.
But you won’t notice any of that if your energy is going into worrying that there’s nothing out there for you. You’ll miss it. Not because it wasn’t there, but because you were too busy scanning for reasons to be anxious instead of scanning for the opening.
And here’s the other side of it. If you don’t actually know what you want, you won’t recognise the opportunity when it turns up. Vague hope isn’t a strategy. Clarity is what lets you spot the right client, the right offer, the right next step, and take it without a six-week internal debate first.
We’re all very good at building a solid case for why we can’t do the thing. Not enough money for that training. Not enough hours in the day. Not confident enough yet to raise your prices, or niche down, or put yourself forward for that opportunity.
If only the conditions were perfect, then you’d really go for it. Except conditions are never going to be perfect. I didn’t wait for perfect conditions and neither did any VA I’ve worked with who’s actually built something worth having.
We all start from wherever we currently are, with whatever we currently have.
So why not here. Why not now.
What do you want to have achieved by the end of this year? Have you been putting it off because you don’t have the tools or the know how yet, or because stepping outside your comfort zone genuinely unsettles you? Maybe you’ve got the same limiting thoughts on loop: is this even the right move, what if it doesn’t work, can I actually make a success of this?
Break it down. Big vague goals don’t get achieved. Specific, time-bound ones do.
Once you’ve got your outcomes mapped out, these are the questions worth answering honestly for each one:
What action will you commit to this week that moves you toward your three month goal?
Drop me an email at amanda@vact.co.uk and tell me what you’re working towards in your VA business over the coming months. I mean that. I’d genuinely like to know, and I’d like to help you get there.
Because here’s the reality nobody sugarcoats enough: a successful VA business takes real commitment and a fair amount of hard graft to build and to sustain. You need the right mindset, and you need the right training, if you want to sidestep the pitfalls that come with running your own business. That’s exactly why VA Membership exists. Learn more…
We built it because we know from experience exactly how much hard work this takes, and we wanted to build something that actually serves you while you’re doing it.
