When you are looking to build and grow a VA business, the biggest mistake you can make is overcomplicating the process. You do not need a 50-page manifesto; you need a clear, actionable strategy. Follow these straight-talking tips to get your business moving in the right direction.
I know you are eager to get started, but do not throw in the towel on your current employment just yet. Right now, your employer is providing your most important asset: financial security. Use your salary to fund your startup costs.
Get a transition plan in place. Could you move to part-time hours in six months? How can you shift your mindset so that your current job becomes the “investor” in your future business rather than a burden? Stay put until the math makes sense.
You likely have the administrative skills to be a VA, but do you have the business skills to run a company? There is a difference. Running a business is demanding and, at times, lonely. Do not do it alone.
Invest in a training company with a proven track record and CPD accreditation. You need more than just a certificate; you need strategies for marketing, financial planning, and client management. Look for a mentor who provides honest, direct support rather than just “rah-rah” motivation. Check out our VA Momentum Course, if you are looking for a course that will hand hold you through the process of creating your new career.
A plan is not a luxury; it is a map. You need to know how you will attract clients, where they are “hanging out,” and what your financial goals are.
A solid plan ensures you focus on your strengths and work only with the clients you actually want to serve. Think about the long-term vision for your family and your life. If the business doesn’t serve your life, it isn’t working.
Decide whether you will start as a Sole Trader or a Limited Company.
Sole Trader: The simplest and cheapest way to start. You have total control and keep all profits, but you are personally liable for business debts.
Limited Company: The business is a separate legal entity. This can offer better tax efficiency and protects your personal assets, but it involves more administration and reporting.
Whatever you choose, do not skip the essentials: Professional Indemnity Insurance and Data Protection (ICO) registration. These are non-negotiable for a professional UK Virtual Assistant. If you aren’t insured, you aren’t a professional.
Invest in contracts, we have a couple of suppliers we recommend. Check out our resources page for links to discounted contracts and insurance.
Your online presence is your shop window. Start networking and building relationships now, not when you are desperate for a lead.
When you start, you might offer introductory rates to secure those first few vital testimonials, but do not stay in the “discount” bracket for long. Create a marketing plan that answers:
What are your top 5 strengths?
Who is your specific target audience?
What is your “stand out” factor compared to the competition?
Claim your handles on Facebook, Instagram, and X, but focus your energy where it matters. For most VAs, that is a high-quality, professional LinkedIn profile. Interact with potential clients and referral partners. Be helpful, be authentic, and be visible.
