What services to offer in your Virtual Assistant business

what services to offer in your virtual assistant business

One of the biggest dilemmas a new Virtual Assistant business owner faces is deciding which services to offer. It is a question that causes a massive amount of lost time and can halt your progress before you have even found your first client.

I see it constantly. You look at what other VAs are doing for “inspiration,” but instead of feeling inspired, you feel inadequate. You see complex tech stacks and specialist niches and convince yourself you aren’t ready. You think you need to be a specialist to stand out in a crowded market.

I am going to be direct with you: you are overcomplicating it. Take a breath and remind yourself that it is perfectly fine to just start exactly where you are.

Start With What You Know

When you are starting out, you do not need all the answers. You just need a starting point. The beauty of the VA industry is its flexibility. You can launch with the skills you already possess from your previous career. You know enough to get started today. As your confidence grows and you gain experience, you can layer in new skills or choose to specialise.

The Value of “Traditional” Admin

There is a common misconception that you have to be a “tech ninja” to succeed. It is nonsense. There is still a massive, lucrative marketplace for traditional administration. While some VAs focus on high-level strategy or complex automation, many business owners simply need someone reliable to manage their diary, handle their inbox, or sort out their filing. Do not dismiss the basics just because they come easily to you.

Reimagining the “Niche”

People often think a niche has to be a specific industry, like “VAs for Accountants.” While that works, a niche can also be built around a specific pain point or a particular system. If you are an expert in a specific software or a master of streamlining procedures, that is your niche. You are fulfilling a specific want, regardless of the industry.

Brainstorming Your Offer

If you are stuck, grab a notebook and answer these questions honestly. Do not overthink them; just write:

  • What software do you know inside out?

  • What is the one skill people always asked you for help with in your old job?

  • What tasks do you actually enjoy doing?

  • Which industries are you already familiar with?

  • What tasks do you find easy that others seem to struggle with?

Never underestimate a skill just because it feels easy to you. There are business owners out there who find those exact tasks draining and are more than happy to pay you to take them off their hands.

Service Ideas to Kickstart Your List

Here is a straightforward list of services to get your brain moving. You do not need to offer all of them. Pick three to five that you can do well right now.

  • Administrative Support: Diary management, email handling, and file organisation.

  • Finance: Basic bookkeeping and invoicing.

  • Customer Service: Managing enquiries and client onboarding.

  • Technical: Website updates and automated email systems.

  • Marketing: Social media management, blog writing, and sales funnels.

  • Specialist: Project management, transcription, and ad management.

Deciding on your services should not be a source of stress. It is a business decision, not a life sentence. Use the skills you have, be honest about what you can deliver, and get started.
