Hashtags are not just for teenagers; they are a vital tool for getting your VA business in front of the right people. When used correctly, they extend your reach far beyond your immediate network, helping you grow your following and boost your visibility.
However, many VAs get it wrong. They either use too many, too few, or hashtags that nobody is actually searching for. If you want a return on your investment, you need a strategy. Here is my straightforward ten-step process to master hashtags for your blog and social media posts.
Do not start typing until you know your objective. You need to identify two things: what you want to be known for (e.g., #VirtualAssistant) and who you want to attract (e.g., #SmallBusinessUK or #HampshireAccountant). Write these down now.
Your list will naturally fall into three main categories. Make sure you have a mix of all three:
Industry: Your specific niche and market.
Location: Where you are based or the specific area you serve.
Generic: High-level keywords like #Motivation or #Efficiency.
Custom tags are unique to your brand. Use your business name or a specific tagline. Keep it short and catchy. For example, I use #virtualassistanttraining.
Stop guessing. Look at the popular figures in your niche and see what they are using. If you are stuck, use tools like HashTagify.me to identify the key players and the tags that are actually driving engagement.
Trending keywords change. Use platforms like Twitter or tools like RiteTag to see what is currently gaining traction. If a trending topic aligns with your business values, jump on it.
Instagram has restricted thousands of hashtags, and some are surprisingly common. If you use a banned tag, your post will be hidden from search results. Always double-check your core keywords before you commit to them.
Popularity is not everything. A tag like #entrepreneur has millions of posts, meaning yours will be buried in seconds. Opt for more tailored tags. For instance, #VAEntrepreneur is often far more effective than a generic term because there is less competition. Use variations like #Copywriting versus #Copywriter to see which offers the best balance of reach and competition.
Daily hashtags are a great way to join a wider conversation. Use them to show some personality or share a specific type of content. Examples include:
#MondayMotivation
#WednesdayWisdom
#FridayFun
#SmallBusinessSaturday
Quality over quantity. On Instagram, aim for 5 to 15 well-chosen tags rather than the maximum 30. On Facebook or LinkedIn, stick to one to three. Spamming your posts with irrelevant tags looks desperate and unprofessional.
Test your combinations for at least a month. Use tools like Brandmentions to track which tags are actually bringing people to your profile. If something isn’t working, ditch it and try a new group.
How are you using hashtags? Have you found a particular combination that works for your niche, or are you still feeling overwhelmed? Let me know in the comments.
