Take the leap: Why courage comes before confidence in your business

Have you ever been in a situation where you were scared to do something, but did it anyway? For many of us, taking the leap into self employment and starting our own business was exactly that. We felt our confidence and courage needed to be higher, but we leapt anyway.

I know many of you are in the early stages of that leap, scared to take a step forward in case you make a wrong move or “fail”. I want to share some honest insights on courage and confidence to help make your journey less stressful and far more productive. Sometimes the reason we procrastinate is that we are actually scared of the success we seek. If that sounds like you, it is time for a reality check.

Courage is all you need to start

The only thing you need to propel you forward and take any form of action is courage. Having the courage to make a decision and take the steps to implement it will move you forward. You have decided to start your own VA business. That is both scary and exciting. Now, what do you need the courage to do today to move it forward?

Think back to how you felt after you took a courageous step in the past. Whatever the action was, I am guessing that immediately after, you felt amazing. You might have been exhausted or relieved, but you had adrenaline pumping through your system. You felt proud of yourself and your ability to do something difficult.

Confidence follows courage

In other words, you gave your confidence a boost. If you want to take your business forward, remember this: your confidence and self worth are boosted only after you do courageous things.

People often say, “I wish I had the confidence to go it alone,” or “I wish I had the confidence to go for bigger clients.” In any of these situations, it is not confidence you need. It is the courage to take the action. Confidence is the reward for the action, not the prerequisite for it.

Make courage a daily habit

Build the habit of doing something courageous into your daily routine and both you and your business will grow. Confidence and courage work in a self propelling cycle. Do something courageous, and your confidence increases. As your confidence grows, you find it easier to do the next courageous thing.

At first, the actions needed to grow your business will feel scary. You will worry about the outcome. However, if you make it a habit to ride that fear and do the scary thing anyway, you implement the cycle. Every courageous act makes the next one easier. When you grow and improve, your business follows suit.
