Comparisonitis is a potentially deadly habit. It kills your confidence and, eventually, your business. If you want to achieve genuine success, you have to master your mindset and stop looking over your shoulder.
(Picture shows 2 Virtual Assistants at the UK VA Conference comparing their paper planes making skills!)
It is easy to look at what other VAs are doing and feel “less than.” But if you are using someone else’s achievements to measure your own worth, you are sabotaging your productivity. It is time to let it go.
Comparisonitis is rigged. You are comparing your “behind-the-scenes” to someone else’s polished front. You don’t have the facts. You don’t know how long they have been in business or what their journey has cost them. Comparing your Day 1 to someone else’s Year 10 is not just unfair; it is dangerous.
Growth requires focus. If you are busy watching the competition, you aren’t implementing your own strategies, refining your services, or ticking off your own to-do list. Take action on your priorities, not their highlights.
Comparison is a portal to an emotional slump. You start thinking you aren’t good enough or getting overwhelmed by the hours you think you need to work to keep up. When you see people constantly posting “wins” in Facebook groups, remember they rarely share the failures. Tune out the noise.
When you play catch-up, you stop innovating. An out-of-control “mind monkey” will sprinkle “shoulda, woulda, coulda” over your business plan, leading to indecision. You cannot visualise your future if your eyes are glued to someone else’s.
Let’s be honest: comparisonitis is often just fear in disguise. It is a convenient excuse to avoid the uncomfortable work of stepping into the unknown. It is easier to worry about a competitor than it is to do the hard work of growing your own reach.
You are an original. Your uniqueness is exactly why clients will hire you. If you emulate others, you become a “knock-off,” and clients want the real deal. Stop the “fake it til you make it” nonsense; it’s insincere. Instead, “act as if.” Amplify the talents you already have and own your potential.
While you are busy watching the competition, who is watching your clients? They are the lifeblood of your business. Make it your mission to know your ideal client better than anyone else. Play the long game. When you focus on your own trajectory, you don’t waste energy worrying about anyone else’s pace.
