10 Straight-Talking Ways to Boost Your Motivation

15th April 2026

boost your motivation

Motivation isn’t a permanent state of mind. Whether you are a seasoned VA or just starting your journey at the VA Training Academy, you will hit walls. We all do.

To grow a successful business, you must be clear on what sets you apart. However, keeping an eye on the competition often leads to “comparisonitis” or the feeling that your business is never “finished.” When that happens, your drive takes a nosedive.

If you are stuck in a negative headspace, you don’t need platitudes; you need a plan. Here are ten practical ways to get back on track.

1. There is nothing wrong with you

Motivation has peaks and troughs, exactly like your energy levels. Sometimes the slump is caused by a tedious task you’ve been avoiding; other times, it’s because family life or health is draining your reserves. Accept that a dip in motivation is a biological and professional reality, not a personal failure.

2. Speak to someone

Isolation is the enemy of progress. If you have a mentor, a trusted colleague, or a peer, talk to them. A problem shared is a problem halved. Often, simply verbalising the issue to someone who understands the VA industry will spark the solution you’ve been overthinking.

3. Get your thoughts on paper

Low motivation is often just mental clutter. As VAs, we balance client needs, business growth, and family responsibilities.Grab a notepad. Write down everything swirling in your head. Clearing your mental desktop frees up the bandwidth required for creativity and drive.

4. Apply an action – any action

Thinking doesn’t build businesses; doing does. If you are paralysed by a lack of motivation, stop thinking about the “right” move and just move. Pick one small task from your to-do list and complete it. The shift from ruminating to executing is the fastest way to break a slump.

5. Use accountability to drive results

We are hardwired not to let others down. If you tell your mentor or an accountability buddy that you will complete a task by 5:00 pm, you are significantly more likely to do it. Send that message now. Commit to the goal, then provide a debrief at the end of the day.

6. Accept that it is never “finished”

A successful, growing business is a living entity. It is never “done.” If you are waiting for a magical day where everything is perfect so you can finally feel motivated, you are chasing a ghost. Embrace the journey and the constant evolution.

7. Kill comparisonitis

It is professional to monitor the market, but it is destructive to compare your “Chapter 1” to someone else’s “Chapter 20.” You see their highlight reel, not the years of graft behind the scenes. Your business, your values, and your journey are unique. Stay in your lane. You will often hear me say: “Do not compare your start to someone elses, start, middle or end!”

8. Reconnect with your “Why”

If you’ve lost your fire, you’ve likely lost sight of your vision. Why did you start this? Was it for freedom, your family, or to escape the corporate grind? Revisit your 3, 5, and 10-year goals. If your current daily tasks don’t align with that vision,it’s time to realign.

9. Make space to think

As a VA, your brain is your greatest asset. If you are constantly “busy,” you have no room for the big-picture thinking that sparks motivation. Block out 15 minutes in your diary just to think and dream about what’s next. This isn’t “daydreaming”; it’s strategic planning.

10. Stop holding on so tightly

Perfectionism is just procrastination in a fancy suit. If you are obsessing over a “perfect” plan, you are likely missing better opportunities right in front of you. Focus on the end goal, be flexible with the route, and stop trying to control every micro-step.

By applying these steps, you can move out of the funk and back into the driver’s seat.
